Here’s where Maryland is spraying to get rid of mosquitos
First published Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024 in the Dundalk Eagle.
Mosquito season is here (and has been here for a while). Here’s how the Maryland Department of Agriculture recommends you protect yourself:
- Wear long, loose fitting, light colored clothing
- Wear insect repellents according to product labels
- Avoid mosquito infested areas during prime periods of activity (between dusk and dawn)
- Install, inspect, and repair window and door screens in homes and stables
- Regularly clean bird baths and bowls for pet food and water
- Remove or empty all water-holding containers
Not all mosquitos carry diseases, the agency emphasized in a press release sent on Sept. 3, but it says it’s best to minimize the number of mosquito bites.
Maryland uses apermethrin-based spray that the Environmental Protection Agency has approved, the agriculture department said in the release. At normal levels, the spray doesn’t pose “unreasonable” risks to human health. But if the chemicals are spilled or released on accident, high amounts of the mosquito spray can damage the nervous system, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture said people should avoid outdoor activities while the solutions are being sprayed “out of an abundance of caution.”
Baltimore County sprays in different parts of the county regularly, see the list below for details. The Maryland Department of Agriculture will spray a part of Parkville on Wednesday, Sept. 4 after 7:30 p.m. as part of “unscheduled mosquito control activity”, unless there is inclement weather, it said.
