The Royal Farms gas station at 7701 German Hill Road in Dundalk sold a scratch-off lottery ticket worth $50,000, according to a press release sent by the Maryland Lottery.

Between Sept. 2 and Sept. 8, the lottery paid out more than $31.3 million in prizes, the press release says. Marylanders spent nearly $52.9 million on the lottery in that period, according to Seth Elkin, the managing director of communications for the Maryland Lottery. That means Maryland pocketed around 40% of sales.

In July, the latest month data is available for, Marylanders spent over $213 million on lottery tickets. The lottery paid out about two-thirds of that money in prizes and kept a bit over $50 million in profit. Part of the profit goes towards operating the lottery, and the rest goes into Maryland’s coffers.

So far this year, Marylanders have spent over $1.5 billion on lottery tickets as of July, records show. Maryland pocketed about $383 million, almost a quarter of the money.

In the last fiscal year, which ended in July, the roughly $700 million in profits were distributed between Maryland’s coffers, construction for schools in Baltimore City, the Maryland Stadium Authority, which builds and maintains Maryland’s sports stadiums, the sports and entertainment events fund, which funds big events like international soccer matches and huge music festivals, and many more.

A little more than a third of players who buy the $10 ticket win a prize, according to the Maryland Lottery website. It’s unclear how many people bought the scratch-off ticket — Elkin said the lottery has no way of knowing the number of people who purchased a ticket. 11 tickets will win the $50,000 prize, according to the website.
